about the site...

Thanks for visiting my website! I hope you enjoy your stay and are able to find your way around without any problems.

I created this site as a project, but it turned into a different few things. First off, it is a blog; simply a place where I can write some of my scattered, random thoughts, and occasionally rant a little bit, about how the man is keeping me (and you) down.

Secondly, it has become a place where I have posted some photography, so feel free to check some of that out as well. And lastly, This site will be used as part of a a few different projects for my masters degree. Feel free to email me if you have any questions, comments, concerns during your stay: (benhelms@gmail.com)

about me...

A little about me, let’s see...Well, I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, then moved to Los Angeles for college and about halfway through that I moved out to Boston. After falling in love with New England (go Pats/Sox!), I made my way back to SoCal and got two degrees from Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles, CA (a B.A. in English-Writing & an M.S. in College Counseling and Student Development). As of now, I'm working as a Hall Director at the University of Portland in Oregon and living/working in the prestigious Villa Maria Hall.

Besides all that, I love writing, backpacking, photography, music (recording, composing and listening), playing/watching sports, and exploring new lands. View my Resume.

The Summons

Tonight during the Villa Maria hall mass, we sang a hymn called “The Summons”. I don’t think a hymn has affected me like this since I first heard “It Is Well With My Soul.” Anyway, the music to this hymn is very simple, in order to accentuate the lyrics, which are also rather straightforward. The first...

Taking Our Talents to Rockaway Beach

This past weekend, I spent a day away at the Oregon Coast. It was AMAZING. Seriously. Relaxing, productive, and bonding. Went with my hall staff (7 total) and it was a great time of just chilling out, eating good food, smoking good cigars and being ridiculous. One of the best weekends I’ve had in awhile....

Brew Labels

It’s Spring Break here at the University of Portland and things are pretty stinkin’ quiet. I hope and pray that this week is as stress-less and productive for all of you as it has been for me. Also, it’s March Madness time!!! The happiest time of the year. God bless us, everyone! So awhile back...

Merry Christmas 2010 In Pictures

It’s been an eventful year, these past 12 months. A new camera, a new degree, a new job, a new town, a bunch of great, new friends, a new hobby, and a brand new, beautiful, loving girlfriend. It’s been a great year, to say the least. So, I figured whats a better way to recap...

Go Tell It On the Mountain

**WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS GUILT TRIPS AND DEPRESSING SUBTEXT** (BUT ALSO SOME FUN PICTURES AT THE BOTTOM!) It’s been awhile since my last real post (kind of a theme the past few months…), and life’s been real busy the last bit with this whole “live-in” position thing. Not exactly a lot of down time these...

What it’s like

It’s been awhile, I apologize. Life as a hall director is a bit busier than i had imagined…which, if you knew how much I had imagined, you’d realize it’s a very busy job. Very extremely busy. I’ll try to get into a more normal routine of writing and stuff…but it might take a few weeks...
